In some areas of my work life, I am my own boss. In others, I have a physical boss that I report to. To make things better, I happen to really enjoy working for my boss! If you weren't aware, Oct 17th is 2016 Boss's Day, and my husband and I both have killer gifts ready for our bosses. If you are lost on what to get your boss for Boss's Day, here are some ideas to help get your wheels rolling (phew I said the word boss a thousand times).
1. Something based on an inside joke
Do you and your boss have a funny saying or inside joke between the two of you? Have it put on a plaque, a rubber bracelet, or print. My boss and I joke that anytime he is about to do something he should think WCSD (What Can Shelby Do), and if I can do it, leave it for me. I really want to make him a WCSD bracelet that looks like the old WWJD ones! For Executive Assistant's Day (yes that exists), my boss got me a desk plaque that says Pepper Potts because in my interview I said my dream was to be his Pepper Potts! I know- we are a great team.
2. Something sentimental related to the job that they do
My boss works primarily in Nashville, so I picked up this print from Brim Papery and am going to get it framed for him for his Birmingham office. She makes these prints for lots of different cities as well. Get creative here- work for Chick-Fil-A, find a vintage Chick-Fil-A sign and restore it. Work for a lawyer, have her acceptance to law school letter framed. Are you a sous chef? Buy your head chef that new apron he has been eyeing- or whatever chef's like- I have no clue!
3. Something to help them stay organize
This one should be easy. Does your boss hate their messy desk? Get them a desk organizer. Other good options, a new planner, a shredder, a label maker, etc- self explanatory.
4. Something to enhance their hobby
This one is my favorite and really shows your boss that you care about their life outside of work. My boss's hobby is fitness, so a gift card to his favorite crunchy post work out spot, or a 6 pack of his protein shakes would work in my case. Think of what your boss does on their own time, and look for something that they would appreciate in that space.
5. Something funny
I am not normally one for cliche gifts (Best Dad mug type stuff), but if done right, it can be a hit. I love this "Boss Lady" mug from Steph at Beholden Prints! This can go along the lines of an inside joke or just be something that will bring on a laugh. My husband got his boss something about a superman boss because she got him a batman shirt for a gift.
These 5 ideas should get the ball rolling and help you think of the perfect Boss's Day gift. And if you are the kind of person who read this and thought "ME get my Boss a gift? They are the one that should be showering me with gifts"- be a nice person and learn to enjoy giving to others.
