The best part about being a wife- being able to surprise your husband with treats when he gets home! Despite the chocolate, this is actually a healthy desert alternative if you can resist eating the bowl!
The tricky part is making the chocolate bowl. You can put anything you would want inside of the bowl. I just put some fat free whip cream and cut up strawberries. That could be substituted for ice cream, custard, pudding, chocolate moose, or any other treat you would like.
Baking Chocolate (8 ounces)
Filling (your choice)
Makes: 2 chocolate bowls
Step 1: Blow up the balloons.
Blow up one balloon for each bowl that you want to make. Try to make your balloons round on the bottom instead of pointed. The balloon in my first picture did not turn out as well as the balloon in the second one.
Step 2: Melt your chocolate.
I bought microwavable baking chocolate and heated it for 2 minutes before it was in its liquid state.
Once chocolate is melted, roll your balloon in the chocolate. Really coat the balloon. You don't need to have an even rim around it, but get the chocolate about half way up the side of the balloon. I coated mine 3 times. Leave the extra chocolate to sit.
Step 3: Make your filling.
Place your balloons on a sturdy surface, and place in the freezer. While chocolate is hardening, prepare the desert that will go inside of your bowl. For me that just meant cutting up strawberries and chipping off some chocolate pieces that I had laid out to harden.
Step 4: Remove the balloon.
Now during step 4 I had to concentrate so hard that I forgot to take pictures! I took a needle and popped the balloons (I hate popping balloons so this was not enjoyable), but the lining was still adhered to the inside of the chocolate bowl. VERY gently, pull the balloon away from the bowl. I broke one bowl while doing this, so you may want to make a few extra just in case.
Hint: Next time I might try spraying the balloon is baking spray before adding the chocolate to make removal easier.
Step 5: Fill you bowl and serve!
As the chocolate sits, some of the run off should make a nice platform for your bowl to stand on. If you want to make sure, put some chocolate on the surface you will put the balloon on first and then set the balloon on top.
