I am so lazy about putting Oliver in socks, and poor thing wakes up with freezing feet! Although some dismiss this as an old wives tale, studies do show that cold feet increase your risk of catching airborne ailments. Since my goal is prevention, those tiny toes are gonna stay wrapped up all winter long.
Most doctors recommend starting on a children's multi-vitamin around 2, but many start sooner. I have taken vitamins on and off my whole life, but I've decided to make it part of our routine.
We use Smarty Pants multivitamins for women and kids. Oliver LOVES vitamin time! I only give him half of a gummy at this age and the poor kid is devastated when it is gone. I use the Women's Complete which is a Multivitamin + Omega 3 + K12, and Oliver takes the Kids Complete with Omega 3 + D3. They also have a Kids Complete that has fiber instead of Vitamin D3 as well as a probiotic/immunity blend (next on my purchase list).
Taking daily vitamin helps build up your immune system so it can fight harder against winter time pathogens. We buy ours on Amazon, but I have seen them at Target and Walgreens as well.
I have a bad habit of only using essential oils to treat ailments rather than to prevent them. Blümsi has a line of blends called "protection" that is a cinnamon and cloves blend. We use their roll-on in this blend, and I have started putting it on all of us every morning. One day Oliver got ahold of it and rubbed it over his entire body! It was like walking around with a talking potpourri dish! I also have the "Thieves" blend from Young Living that I diffuse a few times a week
* Interesting fact: The reason this blend is suppose to help ward of sickness goes back to the time of the Black Plaque in Europe. Thieves discovered that this concoction of herbs and spices could be used to protect them when they went to rob the homes of those who had died of the plaque- thus the name "Thieves" by YL!
I always use a mist or steam humidifier when Oliver is sick, but I am going to start using it night preventatively as well. The excess moisture in the air keeps the lungs lubricated and helps them fight of pathogens.
5. Vick's Vapor Rub
Same as the humidifier, I have decided to start using Vick's even when we aren't sick. Rubbing some on the bottom of your feet or chest helps clear up any congestions and can nip drainage in the bud before it turns into a cold or runny nose.
That is my plan! Anything else I should be doing to help keep us healthy this winter?
