I currently live in Kingstree, South Carolina. I have lived here for 10 months and have at least one more year on my teaching contract. Kingstree is home to the Pig Pickin Festival, 7 red lights (when all are working), and 3,260 people.
I teach in Greeleyville, South Carolina. 12 miles south of my house, 1 blinking caution light, 2 gas stations, population 426.
I have never lived in a small town like this! There is one gym in town- THE GYM...literally you make your checks out to THE Gym- and everyone who walks in there knows or is related to everyone else. The Mayor owns the hardware store, the State Representative spends Friday nights at the high school football games, and all of my students combined have 6 last names!
Growing up I always wanted to live in a small town. I had no idea I would miss the convenience of a city! I miss 5 minute Target runs (our closest is a 50 minute drive), popping into the movies, having restaurant choices, and anonymity. Jarritos is out only restaurant open for normal eating hours and everywhere I go I see a student, a parent, or someone that knows me. Rather than looking at all of the things I don't like about small town living, here are some things that I love!
